Front-End Developer

George Fox University’s Marketing Communications department is looking for a highly motivated individual to join their team and serve as a Front-End Developer.

About the Job:

In this position, the Front-End Developer will play a pivotal role in creating pages and templates for the George Fox University website. We’re looking for a strong developer to join the web team in dreaming big about our website and helping make those dreams a reality. The Front-End Developer should have high standards and want to get it right for every user on every device every time.

Enjoy a healthy work-life balance in a small team of marketing professionals overseeing a website of over 2,500 pages. Grow both your development and design skills in a collaborative and innovative environment.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing templates and components in the Content Management System (CMS) to ensure that development for the website is easy, consistent, and scalable. (40%)
  • Building and updating pages and elements for the university’s web properties that are visually appealing, easy-to-use, accessible, and on-brand on a variety of devices and browsers. (35%)
  • Collaborating with the web designer to give and receive feedback on new pages and designs, balancing ease of development and user needs. (10%)
  • Creating and managing automation scripts to make content updates in the CMS at scale. (10%)
  • Keeping up on web design trends and technology to incorporate into the university’s web properties, and taking action to continually move the website forward with project proposals and new ideas. (5%)
  • Communicating effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students, and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  • By actions, words, and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated experience working cross culturally with respect, appreciation and humility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

A day in the life of this position:

This position plays an integral role in extending the university’s culture of care and excellence into the digital space through the university website because virtually anyone who has a meaningful interaction with the university will visit the website at some point. By beautifully showcasing the George Fox experience and making it as easy as possible to complete tasks, the website welcomes and informs new users and supports those who are already part of the George Fox community. The front-end developer works with the web team to implement any new designs and features for the university website.

The primary focus of this position is bringing these finalized mockups to life on the website using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SASS, or any other tools in a developer’s toolkit. In addition to just looking good, this position also takes care to ensure that the pages are consistent on a variety of devices and screen sizes, meet accessibility guidelines, and meet best practices for speed and performance.

As is the case for a large-scale site, not every page can be handcrafted, so this position will also help to manage automation scripts, components and design patterns, and other features to make sure the web team can keep the site as beautiful and updated as possible.

Giving and receiving feedback is common within a small team of four, including a Web Designer, Director of Web Development, and Director of Digital Strategy. More than just making updates to the site, the developer is a proactive part of the marketing team, looking at ways to improve user experience (UX) and move visitors toward completing marketing conversion actions.

We’re looking for candidates who have:

  • A bachelor’s degree, an associates degree, and/or 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience designing and building web pages in HTML and CSS for different screen sizes.
  • Experience using front-end frameworks, like Bootstrap, jQuery, or Vue.js.
  • Experience working with REST APIs to write automation scripts, especially in JavaScript or Node.js
  • A demonstrated ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals, including giving and receiving design feedback.
  • The ability to be a self-starter with the ability to handle multiple priorities under deadlines and a close attention to detail.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States. This position does not offer visa sponsorship; therefore, only applicants who do not require sponsorship for employment visas, now or at any point in the future, should apply.
  • A commitment to the University’s Theology of Racial and Ethnic Diversity.
  • A desire to work with a diverse community of students and employees who represent various cultures, backgrounds, abilities, ethnicities, political views, and expressions of Christian faith.
  • A personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a church. In addition, employees agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.

Preference Will be Given to Those Who Have the Following Attributes:

  • Graphic or digital design experience, especially using Figma for mockups/wireframes.
  • Experience managing a Content Management System, including creating and managing structured data and template scripting. Experience with Cascade CMS or the Velocity scripting language is especially desired.
