Madoka Magic’s Soul Gems Make for Atmospheric Lamps

Animenewsnetwork - Interest

With the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime celebrating its 10th anniversary and a new movie on the horizon, here comes a pair of table lamps shaped like Madoka and Homura’s soul gems from Useless Use Laboratory.

Much larger than the transformation items we see in the series, these lamps are about 7 inches tall and cost 19,800 yen (approximately US$146) a piece. They will be available to order from August 3 to 21, with delivery expected in mid-December.

Other Madoka Magica items include a pair of footstools that are hollow for storage purposes that cost 19,800 yen (approximately US$146) each and a pair of rugs that sport the witches’ cute-yet-creepy art style for 12,100 yen (approximately US$89) each.

Now, the only question: do the lamps get cloudy the more you use them?

This 4-Foot-Tall Berserk Statue Can Be Yours for $1500

Animenewsnetwork - Interest

This past weekend, Japanese figure maker Prime 1 Studio announced it would be releasing a new figure of Guts from the ever-popular manga Berserk. However, this is no ordinary figure; it’s both giant and super expensive.

The “Guts Berserker Armor Unleashed Edition” figure features Guts clad in the Berserker Armor standing on a pile of monster corpses. At 1/3 scale—including its LED equipped base—it stands at almost exactly 4 feet tall and weighs a staggering 62 lbs.

As for the price, there are two versions of the figure. The basic one retails for 107,790 yen (approximately US$1,534.50) while the “DX edition”—which includes two additional swappable heads along with two additional swappable arms (to change how Guts holds the Dragon Slayer)—will cost you 228,690 yen (US$1,688).

And with such a huge size and extreme attention to detail, this figure looks to actually be worth the hefty price tag.

Only 60 People Will Get These Hand-Made Sailor Moon Glass Pens

Each of these glass pens is based on the Crisis Moon Compact as seen in the Sailor Moon Eternal films.

As part of Sailor Moon‘s 30th Anniversary comes the “Sailor Moon Eternal Premium Frame Stamp Set.” The set contains both stamps and postcards of the Sailor Guardians along with folders and a collector’s box to keep them in. But for those willing to pay the big bucks, there’s a special version of the set which contains a hand-made glass pen. However, there’s only 60 of them being made.

Each of these glass pens is based on the Crisis Moon Compact as seen in the Sailor Moon Eternal films. The nib of each is decorated with a shining moon opal and the shaft is decorated with pink swirls of light in the shape of a ribbon.

While the standard stamp set is already available for pre-order for 6,300 yen (approx. $47.32) at post offices and online, the “Premium Glass Pen Special Set” will be available for pre-order starting on August 10, 2022, and will cost 60,500 yen (approx. $454.40). 30 will be available through the Official Sailor Moon Fanclub and another 30 will be available on the Official Sailor Moon Online Store. As many people will no doubt want to get their hands on these despite the price, those interested in buying one will need to enter a raffle (with the winners gaining the right to purchase). So, if you plan on throwing your hat in the ring, here’s wishing you luck!

Book Teaches You How to Do Your Nails Twisted-Wonderland-Style

Animenewsnetwork - Interest

Disney and Aniplex‘s Twisted-Wonderland is a mobile game featuring groups of pretty boys—each inspired by classic Disney villains like Scar and Maleficent—all going to school together. Whether or not that premise excites you, it’s hard not to admit that the game goes all out on its visual style. Now, with the Twisted-Wonderland Wonder Nail Book, you can wear some of that style yourself.

Wonder Nail Book contains 140 nail patterns based on the characters seen in the game and the dorms they belong to. It also includes information about the color pallet used and how things connect back to the Disney movie they are inspired by.

It’s currently on sale for a mere 2,200 yen ($16.50). If Disney or nail art are your thing, this might be a book to pick up—even if you can’t read Japanese.

Infographic: How Elden Ring Took Over YouTube

Animenewsnetwork - Interest

Even Grand Theft Auto V at number two only had 54% of Elden Ring’s total views.

Earlier this week YouTube Gaming posted an infographic showing just how popular Elden Ring was on the streaming site over the first two months of its release.

Elden Ring had by far the largest number of views compared to the other games listed. Even Grand Theft Auto V at number two only had 54% of Elden Ring’s total views. The other four list games were all under 50%—with Skyrim having a mere 13% of Elden Ring’s total.

The uploads by boss isn’t too surprising. Margit is the first truly difficult boss that players are likely to run into—even more so for under-leveled players who were simply following the plot and had done no extra dungeons. Malenia, on the other hand, is often considered not only the hardest boss in Elden Ring but also the hardest boss in all the “Soulsborne” titles. As for the rest, Godrick is the boss at the end of the first main dungeon while Radahn is perhaps the game’s most epic fight—not to mention a major spike in difficulty during the game’s midpoint. The only real surprise is the Draconic Tree Sentinel. While it is a sticking point for many (as it blocks the door leading to the second half of the game), the picture on the infographic is of the normal Tree Sentinel—which sits just outside the tutorial to teach newbie players the folly of attacking every monster they see. Perhaps, due to having similar names, they have been rolled into a single entry on accident?

Onto uploads by character class, it’s also largely what you’d expect to see as an Elden Ring fan. Samurai is largely considered the best of the melee classes in the early game thanks to weapons like the Moonveil Katana and Rivers of Blood. Meanwhile, the Hero is good for starting strength builds while the Wretch presents the most challenging start to the game. And as for Astrologer, well, that’s the best class for creating magic builds.

And as for their “Elden Lord Awards,” as someone who has played the game obsessively, I can recommend you check out all those channels.

AI: The Somnium Files Creator Has Some Profound Thoughts on Gender Identity

Animenewsnetwork - Interest

Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files writer and director Kōtarō Uchikoshi took to Twitter recently with a bit of trivia about the gender identity of one of the minor characters in his latest game, AI: The Somnium Files – Nirvana Initiative.

*Note: This article contains minor spoilers for AI: The Somnium Files – Nirvana Initiative.

His original tweet thread dives not only into the gender identity of Marco (an AI designed to help police solve crimes by diving into the minds of criminals and key witnesses), but also about the localization process and why certain choices were made as to how the character was referred to in English.

Unsurprisingly, the conservative side of the game’s fandom exploded. Some complaints were met with sarcastic humor.

Others were met with a sincere outpouring of love in the face of hate.

But the most interesting bit was when the conversation turned into a philosophical look at gender identity in general.

Uchikoshi has expressed support for the LGBTQ+ community in both of his AI: The Somnium Files games. In the original game, Mizuki tells Marble bar owner Mama, “The LGBT community is rich in sensibility, has excellent taste, and is full of talented, artistic people. And they share a common struggle…It makes them more sensitive and capable of sympathy. That’s why so many of them are kind and caring. And they choose to live their lives, on their own terms. It means they have a strong backbone. So because of all that, I really respect them. They’re even kinda cool…”

The same sentiment is reiterated in the sequel where Mizuki chastises people who discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals, the disabled community, and other minorities. The game’s encyclopedia entry for LGBTQ+ also plainly states: “The acronym LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning. I love them all!”

Giant 3D Dog Invades Billboards in Shibuya

Animenewsnetwork - Interest

Last year, Shinjuku made waves with its giant 3D cat billboard (which is sometimes replaced with Final Fantasy VII’s Red XIII).

Not to be outdone, rival Tokyo area Shibuya now has their own 3D mascot in the form of a similarly giant dog.

The dog is, of course, an Akita and bears a striking resemblance to Hachiko, the dog who famously waited for his owner to come home from work at Shibuya station each day—even after his owner had passed away.

Moreover, instead of being contained to a single billboard like Shinjuku’s cat, Shibuya’s dog is able to move freely between eight different billboards.

It’s seriously cute, you guys.

Locals Hold Obon Festival in the Shadow of Life-Size VOTOMS Robot

The nearly 12-and-a-half-foot statue was erected back in March 2020, by the Inagi City Tourism Bureau.

This past weekend, residents of Inagi City in western Tokyo, held an Obon festival dance in a park containing a life-size Armored Trooper Votoms “Scopedog” mecha statue—giving a surreal meeting of the traditional and the sci-fi.

The nearly 12-and-a-half-foot statue was erected back in March 2020, by the Inagi City Tourism Bureau. It is one of several mecha statues in the city showcasing the work of Inagi native and the godfather of all mechanical designers, Kunio Okawara. The other statues of his mecha in the area include both the RX-78-02 Gundam and MS-06 Zaku II from Mobile Suit Gundam, and the Yatter Wan from Yatterman—though these aren’t life-size like the Scopedog.
