The role

You will lead and manage the Faculty of Engineering’s Workshops & Operations Team to deliver design advice, manufacturing support, and operational support to engineering researchers and students. You will help deliver and provide support to world leading practical research and world class engineering programmes. You will also lead on operational Faculty logistics.

What will you be doing?

You will manage the Faculty’s Mechanical and Electrical workshops in their delivery of advice, technical designs, components, research support and teaching support. Working with academic staff you will lead and develop your team to meet current and future priorities. You will engage current and potential users (researchers and students) to actively deliver and adjust workshop services to ensure that the best possible experience for all your customers. You will be as happy reviewing complex design data for planning the manufacture of a research project, as you are presenting the workshops’ capabilities to first-year undergraduate students or devising, and delivering, an operational plan to deliver student laboratory coats with a tight time frame. The Workshop and Operations team comprises 26 technical staff (Machinists, tool makers, electrical and electronic technicians, stores personnel).

You should apply if

You will have a proved track record of managing specialist staff in the delivery of bespoke and one-off type project work (or service outcomes) directly to customers or end-users. You will enjoy solving managerial and logistical problems from first principles and will be enthused by the idea of working day-to-day with researchers and students. Candidates with demonstrable experience of operational management, production management, technical team management or any relevant technical managerial or similar logistics experience would be most welcome.
