EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking a Health and Safety Manager to support EMBL staff and host collaborators to create and safe and healthy work environment.  This will include developing health and safety strategies and policies using the latest health and safety knowledge and skills.

The post holder will be responsible for promoting a positive health, safety and wellbeing culture at the Institute, ensuring all Health & Safety requirements are met, within the framework of  EMBL Staff Rules and Regulations and its Health & Safety Policy.

The Health and Safety team is part of the wider Operational and Capital Project team at EMBL-EBI, supporting large new infrastructure projects and operational change. The team also works closely with the Wellcome Genome Campus Health and Safety and the central EMBL team to ensure coordination and best practice at EMBL-EBI and across EMBL’s six European sites. 

Your role

As Health & Safety Manager you will be responsible for health and safety strategies policies; carrying out risk assessments; liaising with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with mandatory regulations; investigating accidents on sites and producing subsequent reports and recommendations; and carrying out site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.  They should maintain good working relationships with all stakeholders, and be an active participant in the relevant Wellcome Genome Campus and EMBL Health & Safety Committees.

Additionally your main responsibilities will include: 

  • Implementing EMBL Health and Safety strategy in the workplace. 
  • Developing and prescribing policies to establish a culture of health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Evaluating practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and ensure adherence to EMBL regulations and considering relevant legislation.
  • Ensure risk assessments are completed and regularly reviewed, implementing mitigating measures to reduce risk of injury and illness.
  • Outline safe operational procedures which identify and consider all relevant hazards.
  • Following up on incident and accidents reports, ensuring they are communicated to relevant personnel and ensuring any subsequent remedial actions are dealt with appropriately.
  • Perform regular policy and procedure reviews to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks.
  • Maintain records of inspection findings and produce reports to track improvements.
  • Develop a culture of reporting incidents, accidents and near misses, producing regular management reports and data to measure progress.
  • Keep up to date with new legislation, maintaining a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the Institute’s ways of working and wider EMBL policy.
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, emergency response, DSE, mental health, noise and occupational diseases. 

You have

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate as a minimum
  • IOSH membership
  • Ideally minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Health & Safety role
  • Deep understanding of legal health and safety guidelines
  • Ability to produce reports and develop relevant policies
  • Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment
  • Excellent organisational and motivational skills
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to engage and influence at all levels 

You might also have

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent)
  • BSc/BA in safety management or relevant field
  • Proven accident and incident management & investigation skills 
  • Mental Health First Aider training
