Japan has four distinct weather seasons
Japan has four distinct seasons, each with unique weather patterns, influenced by its geography and monsoon climate. Below is an explanation of each season, including when they start and end, based on general climatic patterns.
Spring (Haru)
- Start: Early March
- End: Late May
- Weather: Spring is mild and pleasant, with temperatures gradually warming from around 5°C (41°F) in early March to 20°C (68°F) by May. Cherry blossoms (sakura) bloom from late March to early April, starting in southern regions like Kyushu and moving north to Hokkaido by early May. Rainfall increases toward the end of spring, especially in May, as the rainy season approaches.
- Characteristics: Known for cherry blossom viewing (hanami), spring is a popular time for festivals and outdoor activities. The weather can be unpredictable, with occasional cold snaps or warm days.
Summer (Natsu)
- Start: Early June
- End: Late August
- Weather: Summer is hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 35°C (95°F) or higher, especially in July and August. The rainy season (tsuyu) begins in early June and lasts until mid-July in most regions (except Hokkaido), bringing frequent showers and high humidity. After tsuyu, clear skies and intense heat dominate, often accompanied by typhoons, particularly in August.
- Characteristics: Summer features vibrant festivals (matsuri), fireworks, and beach activities. The humidity and heat can be intense, and typhoons may cause disruptions, especially in coastal areas.
Autumn (Aki)
- Start: Early September
- End: Late November
- Weather: Autumn is cool and comfortable, with temperatures dropping from around 25°C (77°F) in September to 10°C (50°F) by November. Rainfall decreases after summer, and skies are often clear. Fall foliage (koyo) peaks from October to November, starting in Hokkaido and moving south. Late autumn may see occasional typhoons.
- Characteristics: Known for stunning red and gold foliage, autumn is ideal for hiking and sightseeing. The weather is stable, making it a popular season for travel.
Winter (Fuyu)
- Start: Early December
- End: Late February
- Weather: Winter is cold, with temperatures ranging from 0°C (32°F) to 10°C (50°F) in most areas. Northern regions like Hokkaido experience heavy snowfall, with temperatures often below -10°C (14°F), while southern areas like Kyushu remain milder. The Japan Sea side (e.g., Niigata, Nagano) gets significant snow, while the Pacific side (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka) is drier and sunnier.
- Characteristics: Winter is great for skiing in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. Hot springs (onsen) and winter festivals, like Sapporo’s Snow Festival, are popular. Coastal areas may see occasional rain but less snow.
Regional Variations
- Hokkaido: Colder and snowier in winter, with a shorter rainy season. Autumn foliage and spring blooms occur later.
- Okinawa: Subtropical, with milder winters (15–20°C or 59–68°F) and a longer rainy season. Typhoons are more frequent in summer and autumn.
- Mainland (Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku): Follows the four-season pattern described, with variations in temperature and precipitation based on latitude and proximity to the coast.
Note on Timing Seasonal transitions are approximate and vary slightly year to year due to climate patterns. The Japan Meteorological Agency provides official start dates for the rainy season and cherry blossom forecasts, but these are region-specific. For example, tsuyu starts earlier in Okinawa (early May) and later in Tohoku (mid-June).
