Anatomic Pathology (Ap) Client Services Supervisor


Job Summary

This Anatomic Pathology (AP) Client Services Supervisor position works under the direction of the department’s Anatomic Pathology Manager to support the Department of Pathology. Supervisors adhere to all departmental and governing organization’s policies and guidelines, and ensures effective and efficient operations of the section’s pre-analytical performance. This position also oversees staff training and competency investigates problems and recommends solutions that provide efficient specimen handling. This poisiton additionally supports this Departmental purpose through the functions of timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation and/or processing, and send out of various pathology material for analysis and/or consultation, in the Anatomic Pathology Client Services section. Functions also include processing material requests for litigious cases, promptly answering telephones, filing and record keeping, supply inventory/ordering, and general area maintenance.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Science related field.
  • Ability to perform statistics and analysis of data including interpretation and correlation.
  • Ability to prepare reports using applicable software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point, Visio), and to present reports to various departmental and hospital committees.
  • Possess technical knowledge of Anatomic Laboratory testing and processes.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, hospital and departmental regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements pertaining to the laboratory.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, quality system essentials, quality improvement, benchmarking, metrics, data analysis, and audit processes.
  • Ability to collect data using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), EPIC EMR, RL Solutions.
  • Must have previous supervisory or lead experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen handling, processing, storage, and shipping requirements to meet policy, procedure, and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as EMR, email, hospital Incident Reporting system (i.e., RL Solutions), and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of LIS sufficient to perform specimen inquiry and other functions such as batching/packing list creation, printing orders and specimen labels, etc.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and to exercise appropriate judgement when setting priorities.
  • Completion of work to meet required turnaround times, suspense dates and deadlines.
  • Adequate familiarity with medical terminology (e.g., test names, specimen types and medical diagnoses).
  • Possess effective verbal communication skills to answer questions from internal and external customers in clear and concise manner.
  • Possess written communication skills to compose concise emails, professional EMR messages, maintain legible and accurate records, and convey information appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow and adhere to HIPAA regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a quality assurance position in an Anatomic Pathology lab
  • ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist (HT)/Histotechnician (HTL), Cytotechnologist (CT), or Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) or possess sufficient demonstrated knowledge of these disciplines.
  • Possess outstanding written and oral communication skills including the ability to lead discussions and deliver group presentations and prepare concise reports and action memos.
  • Demonstrated effective listening and questioning techniques.
  • Ability to recognize aberrant processes that could lead to failures.
  • Possess excellent strategic thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Possess the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships and to collaborate on interdepartmental projects.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in patient care, population health, education, technology, and research. Work Environment
