Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Athletic Trainer for the department of Family Medicine & Community Health at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
This position will serve as a Physician Extender in the outpatient Family Medicine office. Will assist physicians with procedures, providing patient education, ordering diagnostic tests, and contributing to the development and growth of the sports medicine practice.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Assists physicians with the rooming of patients, collection of a brief history of present illness, and vital signs.
- Assists physicians with procedures such as splinting and strapping.
- Provides patient education on injury prevention, rehabilitation exercises, and general wellness practices.
- Under the physician’s direction, orders diagnostic tests.
- Collaborates with physicians to develop comprehensive treatment plans for patients with sports-related injuries or conditions.
- Assists in ongoing research endeavors in relation to relevant patient treatment.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) accredited institution.
Certifications/Licenses
- Current certification as an Athletic Trainer (ATC). Must be licensed in the state of New Jersey as an Athletic Trainer.
- Consideration will also be given to applicants who have not yet obtained all required licensure. Documentation of all required licensure must be provided prior to the commencement of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with electronic medical records is preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Physical Demands: Position requires standing to 2/3 of the time, walking to 2/3 of the time, requires sitting to 2/3 of the time, use of the hands to finger, handle or feel to 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time, talk or hear over 2/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 10 pounds, and under 1/3 of the time up to 25 pounds.
- Work Environment: Office environment. Moderate noise. Some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens and hazardous waste requiring the use of personal protective equipment.
