Position description

Program Overview


The UC
San Diego CalTeach Program in Science and Mathematics prepares undergraduates to become secondary math and science teachers-especially for
high-needs schools. Hallmarks of the program include:

  • Students earn a bachelor’s degree in a math or science field, followed by a
    graduate year to complete a California single-subject teaching credential and an M.Ed.
  • Credential coursework is grounded in math and
    science teaching and learning and is co-designed by the School of Physical Sciences and the Education Studies Department
    (EDS).
  • Practicum courses include meaningful fieldwork in regional high-need schools.

Position
Summary


We seek a Program Director with expertise in curriculum, pedagogy, and current research in math or science
education. The Director will bring a strong commitment to CalTeach and a forward-looking vision that advances the program while honoring its
mission.

This role requires high-level collaboration with campus administrators, faculty, and local school partners to design,
implement, and sustain the CalTeach curriculum and outreach initiatives. The Director will ensure all programmatic approvals, certification
requirements, and partnerships are in place to support high-quality program delivery.



Responsibilities

The
CalTeach Program Director provides overall leadership and contributes to program administration and outreach for the CalTeach Undergraduate
Program.



Leadership

  • Providing program management, supervision, and strategic direction in partnership with
    the CalTeach Faculty Director.
  • Collaborating with faculty, lecturers, program coordinators, and school district
    partners.
  • Managing the program budget and ensuring curriculum alignment with state credentialing requirements.
  • Leading
    recruitment, marketing, and retention efforts for CalTeach students.
  • Securing and managing external grants to support program
    innovation and growth.
  • Working collaboratively with co-directors in the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and
    Education Studies.

Program Administration


  • Organize annual meetings for CalTeach faculty and
    staff.
  • Participate in UC systemwide CalTeach Director meetings and the annual CalTeach Symposium.
  • Coordinate logistics for
    program development, including meetings, applications, and communication with participants and the Faculty Director.
  • Manage the
    annual reporting process to external agencies; ensure timely submission and contribute to report writing.
  • Serve as a backup to
    administrative staff by assisting students, answering inquiries, and providing program information.
  • Provide limited oversight of
    CalTeach undergraduate advising and recruitment.


Outreach

  • Lead external marketing for CalTeach
    programs.
  • Maintain and update program websites; analyze traffic and trends to strengthen digital presence.
  • Manage
    departmental social media accounts to share program updates and support recruitment.
  • Co-plan special events (conferences,
    orientations, workshops) with the Faculty Director.
  • Attend relevant state, regional, and local meetings on behalf of the
    program.

This is a 100% Academic Coordinator II fiscal-year appointment. Academic Coordinators are appointed for 2 years with
reappointment depending on a successful academic review and funding availability.

Qualifications

Basic
qualifications
(required at time of application)

  • Ed.D. or Ph.D. in education,
    a math or science discipline, or a related field.
  • At least seven years of experience in program coordination or
    administration.
  • At least seven years of successful experience teaching adults and/or college-age
    students.

Preferred qualifications


  • Doctoral degree in math or science
    education.
  • Experience with budget management.
  • Experience securing and managing grants.
  • Secondary teaching experience
    and a current or prior teaching credential (California or out of state).
  • Six or more years of secondary mathematics or science
    teaching.
  • Experience with curriculum development in math or science education.
  • Familiarity with research-based practices in
    math and/or science teaching and learning.
  • Experience working collaboratively in teams.
  • Strong written and verbal
    communication skills.
