and coordinating life design programs and workshops, teaching a life design class, and other duties as we develop more programs for our
students. The career coach will work in a team environment to implement innovative and comprehensive approaches to career services and
mentoring that support and enhance the USD experience and prepare students for success in the workforce and in life.
The University
of South Dakota (USD) is hiring a Career Coach for the Center for Career Design. Located in southeastern South Dakota on the banks of the
Missouri River, USD is based in Vermillion—a thriving community, voted the best small town arts scene this year
by USA Today. Vermillion offers many amenities typical of a thriving and vibrant university town, including excellent
schools, parks, Division I athletics, diverse restaurants, and more.
USD is South Dakota’s flagship university and home to
the state’s only law and medical schools. USD offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as
select programs through our second campus, USD Sioux Falls, located in the state’s largest city. With a total enrollment of
approximately 10,000 students, the school’s size and culture foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and a strong sense of community.
The main campus features a park-like setting, and nearly all facilities have benefited from extensive renovations and new construction in
recent years.
The career coach will work in Vermillion within a team environment in a brand-new facility located on the first floor
of the student center to deliver innovative and comprehensive approaches to career development and readiness that support and enhance
the USD experience and prepare students for success in the workforce and in life.
POSITION SUMMARYUnder the direction of the Director of the Center for Career Design, the career coach will develop
a career coaching approach that teaches students the skills to design a personal career pathway and supports students in applying these
skills throughout their USD experience and during their job search. The career coach will also teach a life design course and
design and lead a variety of workshops on topics that include career exploration, employment/internship searches, graduate school
preparation and life design. At the institutional level, the career coach will contribute to collaborative student-facing initiatives to
build career competencies and mentoring into all aspects of the student experience.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters degree preferred or Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of job related experience required
- Proven delivery of
high quality written and oral communication skills in a professional environment. - Experience working in higher education as a
career coach or academic advisor is strongly preferred. - Exposure to college student development, peer mentoring, and teaching is
strongly preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as a professional career coach in all aspects of career readiness and competency development, long-term career management, resume
writing, interviewing, and navigating the employment process. - Serve as instructor for the university’s career and life design
courses. - Design and deliver presentations for a variety of audiences on topics related to career development, life design and
employment searches. - Provides input regarding campus culture and current student perspectives that will impact building career
competencies into the campus ecosystem. Assesses and reports on engagement and impact of services and programming. - Encourages and
assists campus partners with incorporating career competencies into the content of a wide variety of campus leadership and student
activities programs. - Participates in professional development activities and associations.
