Job Description
SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Career Services and Academic Advising at Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, the Career Services Specialist plays a pivotal role in supporting students’ career development. This position provides personalized career counseling, facilitates workshops, and organizes job fairs and recruiting events. The Career Services Specialist collaborates with the campus Employer Relations Specialist, students, alumni, faculty, and employers to enhance students’ career planning, networking opportunities, and transition from school to career. Additionally, this role maintains the online recruitment system (Handshake) and promotes career services through marketing efforts. The Career Services Specialist is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds and encourages their professional growth.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Carries out the mission of the career services office. Provides career counseling and referrals to support students’ career development, including clarifying objectives and obtaining occupational information.
- Provides career planning assistance through appointments with individuals, online assistance, and regularly scheduled workshops with groups.
- Establishes and maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with students, alumni, faculty, employers, and the general public. Initiates contact with employers.
- Assists students with career development and the planning process, including obtaining information on companies, current opportunities for employment, and hiring practices, and making the transition from school to career.
- Plans and implements job fairs and on-campus recruiting events.
- Distributes information on internships, summer jobs, and local part-time jobs.
- Maintains the online recruitment system and works closely with Handshake to maintain/update the career services website.
- Promotes the office to students, alumni, and employers through a variety of marketing efforts.
- Initiates career outreach to diverse student populations, supporting their transition to Bloomfield College with sensitivity to their cultural, socioeconomic, and historically marginalized backgrounds.
- Maintains regular office hours and drop-in availability, both in person and virtually, to accommodate student needs across campus.
- Encourages students to engage in self-reflection and cultivate a growth mindset.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- A minimum of two years of experience in direct interaction with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, families, and administrators from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including Google Suite, email, and the capacity to adapt to web-based advising applications (academic planning tools, Handshake, and early alert systems (EAB Navigate/Starfish).
- Ability to adapt communication styles and adeptly utilize learning technologies.
PREFERRED:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Proficiency in a second language.
Salary Range
$63,833.23-$67,027.48 Annually
