Position
Description
Provides advanced veterinary technical skills with respect to the care, management, treatment, and documentation of care
provided to animals used in the teaching and research program of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine (TTU SVM). This job
would involve instruction of veterinary students in clinical and professional skills laboratories involving multiple species including
physical examination, surgical, medical, handling, and communication situations. Incumbent must be willing and able to follow-up on all
animal health issues on a daily basis. This will at times require weekend and holiday care of sick animals. Adherence to robust safety
practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.
Major/Essential
Functions
- Knowledge and proficiency of basic veterinary technical skills
- Assisting with surgical and anesthetic
procedures - Administration of medications Use of electronic medical record systems and practice management software
- Ability
to safely handle small animal veterinary patients. - Performance of diagnostic testing and acquisition of diagnostic
imaging - Recognition of illness and provision of general nursing care
- Assisting in inventory management and purchasing of
associated veterinary equipment and supplies - Maintenance of veterinary equipment including instrument sterilization
- Teaching
and assessment of veterinary students within a clinical and mobile unit setting - Ability to travel, working with clinical program
veterinarians at off-campus locations. - No inhibiting allergies to animals
- Ability to routinely lift 50 pounds or less
independently. - Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class
cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct
supervisor. - At times, this will require after-hours, weekend, and holiday care of sick animals. As TTU SVM does not have a teaching
hospital, duties will be primarily within the off-site clinical program.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or
GED equivalent. Five years of experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital. Fostering the Core Values of the School of
Veterinary Medicine.
Preferred Qualifications
Seasoned veterinary technical experience in all aspects of small animal
practice.
