Position Summary
Purpose: The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting
the mission of Mott Community College through effective coordination of communications methods and implementation of public relations
strategies to ensure positive representation of the College, by performing public information activities which portray the College in a
favorable light to its target audiences: prospective and current students; administrators, faculty and staff; the media and the general
public.
The Communications Specialist coordinates media relations efforts, working in partnership with the Executive Director,
Marketing & Communications, who develops and leads the media relations strategy for the College. The Communications Specialist translates
the College’s strategic plans into increased visibility for the institution by developing and executing a comprehensive media relations
effort to publicize the activities, events, programs, faculty, staff and students of the College. The Communications Specialist is also
responsible for enhancing the College’s image, by cultivating solid relationships with local, regional and national media, partnerships
within the community, business and government entities and other higher educational institutions.
The Communications Specialist works
closely with the various academic divisions and departments at the College, including the President’s Office, Academic Affairs, Student
Services and Administration, Continuing Education, and the College’s extensions and satellite locations, to ensure that the media relations
program supports the College’s overall mission and strategic goals. Serving as the College’s primary public relations writer and direct
liaison between Mott Community College and various communications media, the Communications Specialist publicizes, promotes and provides
information about the College, overseeing production of a broad range of College publications and external communications.
Scope: The Communications Specialist works and interacts with a broad range of constituencies in different capacities, on
and off campus. The Communications Specialist can function individually and as part of a team on a variety of documents, projects and
presentations, and works proactively on behalf of the entire College, representing its best interest with effective communication practices.
The Communications Specialist must be able to work collaboratively with a diverse set of individuals and groups.
Dimension:
The level of work performed and volume of materials produced by the Communications Specialist is comprehensive, including daily
activity associated with media relations and public information duties and prolific writing/editing tasks. On a typical day, the
Communications Specialist will gather, research and prepare information for press releases or articles for distribution to the media, as
well as college communications and publications; conduct interviews or meet with faculty, staff or students; make contact and interact with
media who print or broadcast stories generated by the Communications Specialist. In addition, the Communications Specialist establishes and
maintains a library of pertinent resources and reference materials for the development of articles for newspapers, television and radio
outlets, presentations and various documents that serve as background to create effective communication pieces. For example, 12 employee
newsletters are produced each year; 20 or more news releases and media announcements are produced on the average each month, with
approximately 300 or more in the course of a year, generating hundreds of media placements and news clippings.
Supervisory
Responsibility:No supervisory responsibility.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in
communications, journalism, public relations, or related field. - Three years’ experience in a public relations and/or journalistic
environment. - Excellent research, interviewing, writing, editing and proofreading skills, including knowledge of Associated Press
(AP) style guidelines. - Experience in developing social media strategies and managing a successful social media initiative.
- Consummate communication skills, with working knowledge of journalism, media relations and general public information techniques and
practices. - Ability to organize resources and establish priorities when gathering information and communicating key messages to the
media and to various internal and external audiences is necessary.

- Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to work as a member of a cross-functional team, demonstrating a capacity to work
effectively with colleagues at all levels of the College. - Keen time management and organizational skills; must be self-motivated
with an ability to develop and follow through on projects while handling multiple assignments with timelines. - Excellent
problem-solving skills, demonstrating ability to make good judgment calls and sound decisions. - Awareness of the importance for
maintaining confidentiality and exercising sensitivity in matters and situations that warrant heightened discretion.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- The employee must be able to move about 1/3 of the time and be stationary about
2/3 of the time. S/he is required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities. - Constantly operates a
computer. - Constantly communicates with people in person, on the phone, and online.
Work Schedule
40
hours, plus additional hours as required. The individual in this position must be willing to work a flexible schedule that will occasionally
include evenings and weekends.
