Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Dental Assistant for the Dental Department of the Eric B. Chandler Health Center at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The primary purpose of the Dental Assistant position is to assist the Dentist and Dental Hygienist during examination and treatment of patients. Performs both chairside and desk-side duties. Performs administrative work, sterilization and miscellaneous tasks.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Seats patients, adjusts chairs, drapes patient with protective covers.
- Lays out dental instruments and supplies.
- Daily stocks dental operatory units with supplies.
- Assists and guides Dentists and Dental Students with patient management.
- Provides back-up coverage for clinical staff, as needed.
- Monitors infection control.
- Daily cleans and maintains dental x-ray developers and barrier protection on x-ray units.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduating from an accredited Dental Assisting Program.
Certifications/Licenses
- Certification as a Dental Assistant in the State of New Jersey is required.
- Valid Dental Radiologic Technology License issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
- Basic Life Support Certification
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a dental office preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Physical Demands: The position requires up to 2/3 of time standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel; reaching with hands and arms and talking or hearing. Position requires lifting up to 10lbs up to 2/3 of the time and up to 25lbs under 1/3 of the time. Special vision requirements are close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships) and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
- Work Environment: Environmental conditions require work near moving mechanical parts up to 2/3 of the time; exposure to fumes or airborne particles over 2/3 of the time, exposure to toxic of caustic chemical up to 2/3 of the time and risk of radiation up to 2/3 of the time. Moderate noise is typical for a Dental Assistant’s work environment.
