Job Description:


Amherst College invites applications for the
Dining Hall Supervisor position. The Dining Hall Supervisor is a full-time, year-round position with a compensation range of $25.85 to
$27.50 per hour – commensurate with experience.



The Dining Hall Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day front-of-house
operations in Valentine Dining Hall. This includes overseeing staff, managing food service, ensuring food safety and sanitation, and
providing excellent customer service. The Supervisor will work closely with the Dining Hall Manager to maintain high standards of quality,
program delivery, and efficiency. This position actively supports the mission and priorities of the College and upholds and advances the
mission, vision, and values in delivering an Amherst College Dining experience.

The Dining Hall Supervisor works a varied schedule
to include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed during certain times of the year. This position is considered essential and critical for
college operations and reports to work at times when the college is closed or impacted by weather or other emergency
situations.



Summary of Responsibilities:

Staff Management


  • Assist in the hiring, onboarding, and completion of
    the probationary assessments of new hires.
  • Train and develop existing staff to include daily pre-meals, safety topics, bi-annual, in
    the rollout of new initiatives and changes, and in areas identified as opportunities to improve; ensure all staff have access to resources
    and materials needed to achieve success.
  • Create and enforce employee schedules to ensure adequate staffing levels and prepare for
    future shifts to ensure success.
  • Monitor employee performance and provide feedback and coaching, conduct a series of employee
    reviews twice a year, and assist in goal setting for each employee supervised.
  • Address employee concerns and resolve conflicts
    throughout the shift, and communicate needs to other supervisors.
  • Actively manage each shift for peak efficiency and ensure all
    staff are completing the minimum expectation for their assigned duties.
  • Identify, correct, and remediate any staff training and
    redirection as needed during the shift.
  • Reward and celebrate the accomplishments of the team frequently.
  • Supervise all staff
    during assigned shift as the person in charge (PIC).
  • Ensure that all members of the team are working in complete and prescribed
    uniforms.

Food Safety and Sanitation

  • Ensure adherence to all food safety and sanitation regulations, including HACCP
    principles, Federal, State, and Local food code, and generally accepted industry best practices.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the
    dining hall to identify and correct potential hazards, opportunities for increased sanitation, and facility/equipment repairs that need to
    be made.
  • Monitor food temperatures, expiration dates, and cross-contamination throughout the shift to ensure safe delivery of food
    to all guests.
  • Monitor and implement proper cleaning and sanitizing procedures, completion of cleaning schedules, and ensure overall
    cleanliness of the operation from floor to ceiling.
  • Manages the inventory, replenishment, and ensures standards of excellence for
    clean dishware are followed, and the dish machine is maintained to achieve said standard.


Food Service

  • Oversee the service
    of meals to ensure consistent quality, safety, portion control, and presentation standards are followed.
  • Communicate ordering needs
    to the Purchasing Manager for restock as needed.
  • Ensure all areas of the dining room are stocked and robustly filled.
  • Ensure
    efficient and timely service to customers.

Customer Service

  • Interact with students, faculty, staff, and community members to
    address their needs and concerns as well as seek feedback on satisfaction levels and areas in which we need to improve.
  • Resolve
    customer complaints in a timely and professional manner.
  • Promote a diverse, positive, and welcoming dining hall environment for all
    guests.

Administrative Tasks


  • Maintain accurate records of time and attendance, time and temperature logs, and guest
    counts.
  • Prepare reports and suggestions for the improvement of dining hall operations as requested by the Manager of the Dining
    Commons.
  • Assist with future operational planning and forecasting labor needs.
  • Complete opening and closing checklists for
    operational excellence.
  • Ensure that resources are properly used to minimize waste and
    expense.


Qualifications:


Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years in a previous food
    service management role, preferably in a college or university setting.
  • Strong leadership and organizational
    skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet
    deadlines.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft
    Office, Google Suite, Menu Signage, Workday, and POS Software.
  • Possession of a current Food Handler’s Certification, Allergen
    Certification, and Choke Saver, or achieved in the first 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to work in diverse kitchen environments that
    frequently vary between hot, cold, humid, etc., and around cooking and food production equipment.
  • Work outdoors as
    needed.
  • Possess and maintain a current motor vehicle license and credentialing through the Five Colleges Consortium.
  • Must
    wear a uniform, including safety, non-slip shoes.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test.
  • Successful
    completion of required reference and background checks.


Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in food and beverage management or
    related field.
  • Previous experience in a high-volume college dining hall.
  • Proven success in engaging with the college-aged
    consumer.
