The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director is responsible for providing management and leadership of publicly-funded initiatives to Yavapai County and the Northern Arizona region, as delegated by Yavapai College leadership and the Arizona SBDC State Director. The incumbent will coordinate activities with other college departments, the Arizona SBDC state network, and other state and local agencies. Oversees a team of SBDC analysts who work with small business owners throughout Yavapai County to help them launch, grow, sustain and exit their businesses. The Director provides support to the college’s Regional Economic Development Center, maintains a positive working relationship with college staff and programs, and represents the SBDC to key stakeholders such as the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), state and local government, other academic institutions, and business organizations.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate efforts in achieving state mandated goals of unique clients, startups, capital infusion, job creation, jobs supported, and sales increase.
  • Supervise SBDC personnel and assist them in achieving their goals
  • Leads efforts to maintain Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) certification along with staff compliance with the SBA certification requirements.
  • Attend required state and national SBDC meetings and trainings
  • Produce weekly updates on SBA, USDA, and other disaster relief resources for community partners and emergency management groups
  • Provide periodic status reports to AZSBDC network, REDC director, and community partners
  • Write and submit an annual grant proposal to the Small Business Administration

  • Work with local Chambers of Commerce, economic development agencies, city managers, and elected officials
  • Build strong community partnerships that contribute to the client pipeline
  • Prioritize exceptional customer service and responsiveness to strengthen the SBDC brand and value across the community
  • Providing direct counseling services to clients and participate in networking locally and statewide
  • Seek and advocate for additional funding sources which will build team capacity, and support service to more rural, underserved communities in Yavapai County.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Expectations & Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Business, Management, or related field
  • Three years’ experience owning and operating a small business
  • Certified Business Advisor designation or the ability to obtain certification in the first year
  • Three years’ experience teaching at the college or corporate trainer level, or providing management consulting services
  • Leadership, project, and operational management experience.
  • Proven team building, organizational, mentoring, and communication experience.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational ability to balance multiple constituency expectations
  • Experience with accounting practices for grant funds
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability toward the performance of job duties

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Business, Management, or related field
  • Five years’ experience owning and operating a small business
  • Three years’ experience teaching at the college or corporate trainer level, or in providing management consulting services
  • Three years’ management experience in a public or education sector program
  • Two years’ experience with federal grant programs and operating in an environment of multiple constituency expectations, including Federal SBA, State SBDC, and college-level
  • Professional experience in a community college/higher education work environment.
