JOB SUMMARY

The Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the daily management and continued development of fitness and wellness facilities and programs within the department. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation & Wellness, this role provides leadership in student and part-time staff supervision, program development, facility and equipment oversight, risk management, assessment, and outreach. The Fitness Coordinator supports holistic well-being by offering inclusive, accessible, and innovative fitness and wellness opportunities for the Saint Louis University community.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES


Staff Management & Development

  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates a staff of 20+ student employees and part-time instructors, including group fitness instructors, personal trainers, and building maintenance
  • Provides ongoing professional development, certification renewal opportunities, and mentorship for staff
  • Conducts regular staff meetings, promotes a culture of accountability, and serves as a role model for inclusive, customer-centered service

Program & Service Coordination


  • Oversees a comprehensive fitness program including group fitness classes, personal training, small group training, and specialized workshops
  • Develops and implements physical wellness initiatives (e.g., fitness challenges, stress relief programming, nutrition education collaboration) that complement campus-wide well-being goals
  • Incorporates new and emerging fitness and wellness trends that motivate students to make healthy choices
  • Manages class scheduling, registration, and cancellation processes for all programs

Facility & Equipment Oversight

  • Oversees the daily operations of fitness spaces in the Simon Recreation Center, including: 25,000 sq. ft. of fitness space with 200+ pieces of cardio and strength equipment, six multipurpose gym courts, five multipurpose rooms, a spinning studio, fitness assessment room and an indoor track
  • Coordinates preventative maintenance, cleaning, and repair of all fitness equipment
  • Tracks equipment inventory and usage and develop equipment replacement plans

Assessment, Data & Budget


  • Collects and analyzes participation data, satisfaction surveys, and usage trends; prepares reports for leadership
  • Manages program budgets, including payroll, equipment purchasing, and cost estimates
  • Contributes to departmental strategic planning and assessment efforts

Marketing, Outreach & Collaboration

  • Partners with the Assistant Director and other marketing staff to promote fitness and wellness services
  • Develops outreach initiatives that increase participation and reduce barriers to access
  • Collaborates with the Division of Student Development and other University partners to integrate wellness programming across campus
  • Represents the department on campus committees and at professional conferences

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of collegiate recreation and fitness program operations
  • Knowledge of exercise science principles, fitness programming methodologies, and emerging health and wellness trends
  • Knowledge of risk management and injury prevention practices in fitness and recreational environments
  • Knowledge of fitness facility operations and equipment management
  • Knowledge of fitness equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation, Health Promotion, or related field
  • National certification in group fitness or personal training (e.g., ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NSCA) or willingness to pursue certification within first 90 days
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within first 90 days)
  • Mental Health First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within first 90 days)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Student Affairs, Wellness, or closely related field
  • Positive full-time work experience in collegiate, community, or commercial fitness environment, with specific experience in programming and/or facility operations
  • Experience supervising, managing, and mentoring staff, to include recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining
  • Leadership experience with consistently progressive responsibilities in a fitness, university, or recreational setting
  • Familiarity with Fusion or similar recreation management software
  • Participation in professional organizations, research, and scholarship, and/or professional development such as association leadership or presentations

This is a full-time hourly position. Pay starting at $20.67/hour (commensurate with experience), plus benefits including vacation and sick leave, health/dental/vision/life insurance, 403B retirement savings plan and match, tuition remission, employee assistance program and wellness program.
