About Maintenance
Division
The Maintenance Division provides comprehensive maintenance services to academic, administrative, athletic, and
residential buildings as well as to faculty housing. These services are provided by a staff of carpenters, painters, locksmiths,
electricians, plumbers, and maintenance mechanics, HVAC technicians to ensure a safe and pleasant educational environment. The maintenance
staff also conducts routine preventive maintenance checks on various electrical, mechanical, and architectural systems in all campus
buildings.
About The Position
The General Mechanic maintains, repairs, and installs building electrical
heating and plumbing systems, components, fixtures, appliances, and/or equipment in accordance with established work order maintenance
schedules, service calls, or specific assignments by supervisor. This includes extensive installation and repair of interior and exterior
lighting fixtures and systems as well as servicing of bathroom plumbing fixtures, and residential heating systems. The General Mechanic is
an essential personnel position that may be required to report to work during inclement weather or other times that non-essential personnel
may be excused.
Primary Responsibilities
- Promote a safe working environment by following Haverford College
safety policies and procedures; recognized industry standards, practices, and operational guidelines; OSHA regulations; and relevant
building codes and regulations - Maintain written records including, but not limited to, work orders and inventory control
documentation - Plan work to ensure cost effective use of labor and materials
- Prepare and submit to appropriate supervisor, as
needed, lists of materials required to complete assigned tasks - Team with other trades in replacement and renovation work as
required - Maintain an acceptable attendance record, be punctual, and meet deadlines. Inform supervisor of any unscheduled leave time
in a timely manner - Maintain proficiency at current level and continually update knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars,
publications, and contact with others in the trade - Participate in training sessions and seminars
- Perform other duties as
assigned within the normal scope of the department, including snow removal
Line of Report: The General Mechanic
reports to the Manager of Central Plant HVAC Services.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or
equivalent - Three years’ experience in minor electrical, plumbing, heating, and appliance repair

- Ability to establish and maintain a positive and cooperative working relationship with members of the
Department and the College community - Ability to plan and prioritize work effectively
- Ability to maintain current skills and
knowledge - Proficiency in the maintenance, repair, and installation
- Knowledgeable of OSHA regulations, relevant building
codes, and industry safety standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Journeyman Level in Trades
- Six years
work experience in the electric, heating, and plumbing trades
