Scope of Job:
Responsible for the strategic planning, organization, execution, and administrative management of the IT Data
Center Services functions across multiple geographic locations. Responsible for leading a team of professionals and ensuring the smooth and
efficient functioning of data center facilities, server management, database administration, application administration and leveraging cloud
or infrastructure as a service (IaaS) solution.
Description of Duties:
Data Center Management
- Develops and implements strategic plans for the data center, aligning them with organizational objectives.
- Oversees the
day-to-day operations of the data center, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, security and all budgetary responsibilities. - Monitors and manages data center capacity, power usage, cooling systems, and physical security.
- Implements best practices for
data center infrastructure, including cabling, racks, and environmental controls. - Ensures the efficient operation and security of
the data center in compliance with applicable University, local, state and federal regulations. - Maintains high levels of
performance, security, and reliability to provide the IT services that support students, faculty and staff.
Server
Management
- Leads a team of server administrators responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and
troubleshooting of servers. - Develops server management policies and procedures, ensuring high availability and efficient resource
utilization. - Implements and maintains server monitoring and performance tuning tools.
- Ensures compliance with server
security and backup policies.
Database Administration
- Oversees the activities of the database
administration team, including database installation, configuration, performance tuning, and backup/recovery. - Develops and enforces
data governance policies and procedures. - Ensures the security and integrity of databases, including access controls and data
encryption. - Stays updated with the latest database technologies and trends, recommending improvements and innovations.
Application Administration
- Manages a team responsible for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of
business applications hosted in the data center. - Collaborates with application development teams to ensure seamless integration
between applications and infrastructure. - Oversees application performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Develops disaster recovery plans and performs regular testing to ensure business continuity.
Cloud and Infrastructure
as a Service (IaaS)
- Evaluates, recommends, and implements cloud or IaaS solutions for data center services, where
applicable. - Develops and executes migration strategies to leverage cloud-based infrastructure for cost optimization, scalability,
and disaster recovery. - Monitors and manages cloud or IaaS services, ensuring compliance with security and governance
standards. - Stays updated with the latest cloud technologies and trends, recommending, and implementing improvements and
innovations.
Team Leadership
- Plans and develops short and long-range plans for the assigned area.
- Hires, trains, mentors, and supervises a team of data center, server, database, and application professionals.
- Sets performance
goals and objectives, provides feedback, and conducts regular performance evaluations. - Monitors the formulation and coordination of
projects or event specifications for the assigned area. - Fosters a collaborative and innovative work environment, encouraging
continuous learning and professional development. - Coordinates with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure effective
communication and alignment of objectives. - Participates in various committees, professional training, industry conferences, and
conventions. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned
supervisor.
Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education:
Bachelors
degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or a related field from an accredited university.
Preferred
Education:
None.
Licenses/Certifications:
ITIL Foundation Certification or obtain within one year of hire.
Required Experience:
Six (6) years’ experience with the computing and information systems field in positions requiring
technical expertise in the design, configuration, integration, and implementation of sophisticated Information Technology Infrastructure and
Information Systems. Experience implementing administrative information systems, including supervisory or management experience.
Preferred Experience:
Higher Education experience. IT Service Management Project Management experience.
Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment. Computer equipment and accessories.
Working Conditions:
Needs to
be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds
of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects,
including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande
Valley.
Other:
In-depth knowledge of data center infrastructure, server hardware, virtualization technologies, and
networking concepts. Strong understanding of database management systems, SQL, and data governance practices. Proficient in application
administration, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of enterprise-level applications. Excellent leadership and people
management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team. Solid project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks
and meet deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge and
experience in implementation of project management best practices.
To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work
on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to
maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in
the position.
