JOB PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Sr. Director of IT for Auxiliary Enterprises, the IT Support
Specialist is responsible for providing general IT support across all Auxiliary Enterprises. IT-related tasks may include setting
up, managing, and troubleshooting technology systems used by each business unit associated with the Office of Auxiliary Enterprises. Duties
may include providing end-user support with laptop and desktop computers; providing support for card readers, printers or other IT and
computer peripherals; assistance with Howard University physical and Wi-Fi network; diagnosing and resolving hardware problems including
specialized hardware such as point-of-sale terminals, building controllers, laundry machine interface devices, OR parking ticket issuing
hand-held terminals; configuring and updating system and application software; and tracking down data and communication issues.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include faculty, staff, and students. External contacts include vendors, contractors,
and the general public.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provides technical support for various hardware used across
Auxiliary Enterprises including point-of-sale terminals, printers, laptops, desktop computers, cameras, card readers, scanners, contactless
readers, monitors, kitchen-display systems, time clocks, building/laundry controllers, building/laundry readers, point-of-sale terminals,
peripherals, and other equipment used by contractors and employees in Auxiliary Enterprises. - Provide Tier-1 support for Dining
Service point-of-sale terminals and peripherals. - Level Review diagnostics and assess the functionality and efficiency of
systems. - Work with system providers in the support of various applications.
- Work with Howard University ETS to Implement,
enforce and support security measures. - Monitor security certificates and company compliance with requirements.
- Monitor
systems to ensure they are operating as expected. - Provide technical support to Auxiliary Enterprises contract staff and troubleshoot
computer systems and peripheral equipment used by Auxiliary Enterprises contractors. - Install and update company software and
hardware as needed. - Anticipate and make recommendations regarding the replacement or updating of computer items.
- Assist with
installation, upgrades, and the disposal of IT-related products. - Coordinate with ETS and off-prem/cloud-based vendors to ensure that
Auxiliary Enterprises systems and data are backed up and back-ups are verified and able to be restored when necessary. - Assemble,
install, and configure systems and components per vendor specifications BUT within the policies, procedures, and best practices of Howard
University, HU Enterprise Technology Services, and Auxiliary Enterprises. - Stay updated regarding the knowledge and skills needed to
keep up with rapid advancements in computer technology. - Maintains logs of activities and completed work and provides reports to the
Sr. Director. Specifically, Laundry System Status and the Auxiliary Enterprises IT Asset List. Additional logs
may be assigned.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of TCP/IP, networking, and related
technologies. - Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Windows Operating system.
- Ability to develop plans for resolving and
implementing technical and operational problems. - Ability to work independently, to plan and prioritize activities that may span
several locations on campus. - Ability to identify and resolve technical problems due to complex system interfaces.
- Competence
in both oral and written English to communicate clearly and concisely. - Ability to operate in an office environment and in the field
(various locations across all campuses of Howard University). - Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work
relations with faculty, staff, students, and the community.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer
Science, Information Technology or closely related field and one year
relevant experience; or equivalent combination of a total of
five (5) years combined relevant education and experience.

Range: $60,000 – $69,000
