Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of
Building Maintenance, the Cold Side Service Technician performs skilled tasks in the operation and in the diagnosis, mechanical repair,
maintenance, renovation, and installation of refrigeration equipment and systems used in food service and other
areas.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties will include, but not be limited
to:

  • Properly troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair Commercial Kitchen Equipment, including cooking, refrigeration, ware washing, and
    other specialty foodservice equipment; this requires the ability to lift or carry up to 100 pounds and to work indoor or outdoors in extreme
    temperatures
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and ability to read diagrams and
    schematics
  • Communicate with manufacturers as needed to help with diagnoses and parts identification
  • Perform Preventive
    Maintenance tasks such as checking equipment operation, cleaning, lubrication, adjusting and repairing, ice maker service, etc., consistent
    with the Manufacturer’s Equipment Operation and Repair Manuals and contemporary standards of good practice
  • Use diagnostic equipment
    and diagrams to troubleshoot problems and identify solutions
  • Abide by and comply with university policies and
    procedures
  • Advise supervision on upgrading/replacement needs of systems and related components; and assist in the development of
    recommendations for their purchase
  • Install new systems and system components
  • Effectively plan and perform in a multi-task
    environment and meet self or pre-imposed objectives and deadlines
  • Exercise the use of independent judgment
  • Follow safe work
    practices and accident prevention procedures
  • Maintain a neat and orderly service vehicle, along with accurate parts and tool
    inventory
  • Maintain an effective working relationship, both inter and intra-departmentally
  • Prepare time and material
    estimates as required
  • Supervise work performed by service contractors as assigned by the Manager of Building
    Maintenance
  • Perform periodic inspections of work areas, buildings, and related structures and assure steps are taken to maintain
    same in accordance with recognized standards of good practice
  • Respond to student and other groups issues in a supportive,
    professional, timely, and problem-solving manner
  • Perform other duties or special assignments as assigned


Required
Skills

  • Effective oral and writing skills
  • Practical application of recognized standards of good practice relevant to
    electrical construction and maintenance, including related mechanical equipment such as controls, pumps, motors, compressors
  • Ability
    to read and interpret mechanical drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Ability to work with moving mechanical parts, pressurized steam
    equipment, open flames, heated surfaces, liquids, and risk of electrical shock in damp, humid, or freezing conditions
  • Ability to
    work on ladders, roofs, and other high places
  • Effective human relations skills with a proactive customer-oriented
    focus
  • Ability to be viewed by all campus constituencies as supportive
  • Available at all hours for emergency service, as well
    as ability to work overtime, and participate in on-call rotation
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and
    codes
  • Practical application of recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety and
    security
  • Knowledgeable in basic practices employed in the building trades
  • Frequent use of hand and power tools, electrical
    testing devices, shop equipment, multiple controls, and fine adjustments as needed
  • Ability to read and understand complex wiring and
    control system diagrams
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools with differing degrees of complexity

Required
Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification is mandatory
  • Five (5) years
    hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, and renovation of refrigeration systems and devices, plus experience in
    kitchen/restaurant equipment and other related control devices preferred

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and
an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.
