Job Description:


The Land
Steward is responsible for the stewardship, management and will assist with program development at Franklin & Marshall’s Spalding
Conservancy. This part-time role blends active land management, community outreach, and support for academic engagement, ensuring the
preserve is ecologically resilient and aligned with F&M’s mission. Position will report to the Director for the Center for the Sustainable
Environment, and collaborate closely with Academic Affairs and Facilities.

Essential Functions:


  • Land Management
    • Maintain and improve trails, clear brush, and remove invasive species using hand and power tools.
    • Monitor property
      conditions and address issues related to safety, access, erosion, and ecological health.
    • Support habitat restoration projects and
      maintain site infrastructure such as signs, boundary markers, and kiosks.

  • Program Coordination and Support
    • Promote the use of the preserve for teaching, research, and student projects, collaborating with faculty and staff.
    • Assist
      in designing and planning stewardship actions, collecting ecological and cultural data, and maintaining digital records.
    • Coordinate
      logistics and follow-up for team activities, including volunteers, contract crews, and researchers.

  • Community Engagement
    • Welcome and orient visitors, set expectations for responsible use, and act as a liaison with neighbors and the
      public.
    • Develop and lead volunteer activities for college students and community members, including guided tours and educational
      programs.
    • Support outreach and help foster a welcoming, inclusive culture that values conservation and education.

  • All other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a
    relevant field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in land management, ecological restoration, conservation, agriculture, forestry, or
    related field
  • Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain field equipment, including a chainsaw.
  • Knowledge of best
    practices in conservation land management.
  • Experience with public engagement and volunteer coordination.
  • Ability to work
    outdoors in all conditions as well as indoors on program planning and documentation tasks.
  • Comfort with technology for
    recordkeeping, mapping (GIS), and communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences, including students,
    faculty, neighbors, and partner organizations.

Additional Information:

Offers of employment are contingent
