Job Description:


Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by maintaining, fitting, and altering uniforms for the staff and students. Coordinates and manages the time, duties, and supplies of the sewing room and staff.

This is a 40 hour per week and 52 weeks per year 1 FTE position.


Essential Functions

  1. Issues well-fitting and well-maintained NU Corp of Cadets and VSM Uniforms. Measures, fits and alters waist bands, pants and skirt hems, and sleeve cuffs. Repairs and changes rank on uniforms as needed.
  2. Performs fittings and alterations for local service people to current department and service branch standards.
  3. Undertakes alterations and sewing projects from the community at large when NUCC workload allows.
  4. Delegates sewing, inventory repairs, and fitting tasks to part-time workers and supervises their performance. Trains workers in fittings and sewing skills as necessary to process the workload.
  5. Manages the supplies and time schedule of the Sewing department. Informs the Uniform & Laundry Services Manager of any inventory or sewing space needs.
  6. Coordinates with the Uniform & Laundry Services Manager to establish necessary timelines and communicates the needs of the shop in order to achieve deadlines.
  7. Manages workflow area to ensure a productive, safe and enjoyable environment.
  8. Contacts customers with potential questions or status updates.


Other Functions

  1. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
  2. Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
  3. Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
  4. Uses computers, telephones, and job-related equipment, including proficiency in related systems and software.
  5. Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  6. Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  7. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.


Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Additional Sewing/alterations experience may substitute education requirement.
  • 3 years of sewing experience with an intermediate or higher skill set.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot industrial sewing machines (Juki DDL-8700), consumer serger, blind hem machine, industrial gravity iron, and Janome embroidery machine.
  • Ability and willingness to learn military insignia placements and alterations requirements
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)
  • Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 40 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus, climb up and down stairs repeatedly.
  • Work some evening or weekend hours required at time of Rook Issue in Fall, and Graduation in Spring.

Environmental Conditions


  • Indoor work at a sewing workstation.
  • Low to medium level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations and temperature changes.
