The Online Course Development Specialist plays a pivotal role in developing, organizing, and maintaining
distance learning (DL) courses in Canvas LMS. This individual collaborates closely with faculty, instructional designers, and ODEOL staff to
transform syllabi, course blueprints, and instructional materials into engaging, accessible, and fully functional online courses. The ideal
candidate will possess technical proficiency in course building, a strong commitment to academic quality, and the ability to ensure
compliance with Quality Matters (QM) standards, accessibility requirements (ADA 504/508), and ODEOL’s minimum content
policies.
Essential Job Duties
- Build and organize course modules, assignments, quizzes, and discussions in
Canvas LMS in alignment with ODEOL’s Course Design Blueprint. - Upload, format, and integrate syllabi, learning outcomes, readings,
lecture notes, videos, and assessments into Canvas. - Ensure all online courses meet federal credit hour requirements, FERPA, ADA 504,
Section 508, and Quality Matters standards. - Incorporate multimedia resources (videos, graphics, and interactive tools) to enhance
engagement and accessibility. - Work closely with faculty to convert instructional content into online-ready formats while maintaining
academic rigor. - Perform quality checks on courses prior to term launches, ensuring required elements such as syllabi, welcome
messages, assessments, and lecture materials are included. - Maintain consistency across DL courses by supporting version control of
master course shells and templates. - Provide technical guidance to faculty on embedding instructional materials and using Canvas
tools effectively. - Assist with configuring announcements, gradebook functions, and communication features to support faculty-student
interaction.
Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
- Bachelor’s degree in
education, instructional technology, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred. - At least two years of experience
working in a Learning Management System (LMS), with emphasis on Canvas course building.
Skills and
Attributes
- Proficiency in Canvas LMS, multimedia integration, and familiarity with Quality Matters
standards. - Understanding of ADA 504, Section 508, and universal design for learning (UDL).
- Excellent written and verbal
communication abilities for collaboration with faculty and staff. - Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines and
manage multiple projects simultaneously.
