The Career Consultant reports to the Director of the assigned cluster in Academic and Career Development. Academic and Career Development is part of Campus Career and Advising Services in University College. University College is 1 of 3 units in the Division of Undergraduate Education. The Office of Academic and Career Development (ACD) facilitates University College students academic and career success by providing programs and services that engage students in exploring and committing to educational and career goals, developing and implementing meaningful academic plans, transitioning into degree-granting schools, and translating learning to the world of work. ACD student success advisors and career consultants work in clusters of majors with similar themes and interests to help students explore their interests, choose a major, and create a plan to achieve their goals. University College provides a common gateway to the academic programs available to entering students. Programs and services offered by University College focus on assisting students with the development of the knowledge and skills needed for success in the collegiate environment, including academic advising, academic support, career planning, peer mentoring, and new student orientation. University College also offers college readiness programs that focus on helping high school students to become college bound. The Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) serves as the catalyst for enhancing the quality of the undergraduate student experience while promoting on-time graduation for all undergraduate students at IU Indianapolis. 3 units report up to the Division: University College, Honors College and the Institute for Engaged Learning.
Job Summary
The Consultant will guide University College (UC) students by providing individual and group career advising and appropriate referrals for academic advising. Career Consultants are key to providing the career-related events that support positive career outcomes for IU Indianapolis students like Major and Career Information Day, Field Trip Fridays, Fall Career Week, and more. The role is responsible for teaching UCOL-U210, a course that assists students in career exploration. This position will be part of the Major and Career Exploration team and support students pursuing undergraduate majors in the health and life sciences.
Department – Specific Responsibilities
- Provides targeted programming, intervention and success strategies to assist students and promote their transition into degree granting schools and programs.
- Assists the cluster in the development, implementation and evaluation of cluster initiatives, programs, events, resources and outreach related to the success of students within the cluster.
- Provides ongoing leadership and training on career matters to colleagues.
- Provides programming and resources for UC students.
- Connects to campus career services colleagues. Includes providing information on cluster fields, training of cluster staff, and serving as liaison to schools and units.
- Assess training/ information sharing needs of cluster in regard to career development.
- Provides general education on career development for cluster and faculty.
- Communicates with school staff and nurture these relationships.
- Identifies and collaborates with faculty champions.
- Identifies professional organizations for fields in cluster and share list with advisors and students. Be visible to schools as a source of important information.
- Actively participates in Career Services Council.
- Tracks learning outcomes and regularly communicate to cluster.
- Provides individual and group career advising to undergraduate students and provides appropriate referrals for academic advising. Includes engaging students in goal setting; supporting at-risk students.
- Reviews and maintains student records; email communications, etc.
- Meets with students individually and in small groups.
- Understands the student population of cluster. Assist with STAR mentoring.
- Utilizes appropriate technology and resources to inform daily practice.
- Reviews, prepares and maintains student records.
- Works to encourage student participation in meetings and career development programming.
- Promptly records and submits notes, with appropriate tags, in AdRx following student meetings. Promptly notes no-show and cancelled appointments in AdRx following student meetings.
- Assists the team in the development, implementation and evaluation of cluster initiatives, programs, events, resources, and outreach related to the success of students within the cluster.
- Designs, delivers, and evaluates programs, events, and resources.
- Teaches as appropriate (see career consultant list of projects/resources/events).
- Refers students to the various resources/events.
- Brainstorms, researches, designs, and experiments with new modes of communication including visual aids, outreach, and helpful tips.
- Assesses programming needs of cluster and refine projects/resources/events, as needed.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- Master’s degree plus 1 year of experience advising, teaching, or counseling.
- Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of experience advising, teaching or counseling.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary
PAY SCALE: $22.40 – 24.76 per hour
Pay rates will be determined based on education level and years of experience.
Work Hours
20 – 28 hours per week depending on office needs
