Description of Job Duties

Job Summary:

The HVAC apprentice reports to the HVAC Supervisor in coordination with the Physical Plant Director with the primary duties of assisting in installation, maintenance, diagnostic, and repairing of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. Acts as a resource for the physical plant department and builds effective, strong working relationships to enhance department operations and functions.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in routine adjustments to start or stop seasonal equipment
  • Assist in maintenance and repairs of various electrical machinery
  • Assist in the coordination of outside contractors as requested
  • Works with plumbers, electricians, and other members of the Physical Plant on projects
  • Maintains registration for apprenticeship with the State of Oklahoma
  • Provides support services to the department in a manner that professionally, cordially, and efficiently assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Specific assignments are based on unit need and assigned by the supervisor which could include such things as routine maintenance, interpret written instructions, and reading blueprints

  • Ability to work with, assist, lead, and take directions from others in the interest of operating the Physical Plant to its optimal efficiency

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:


  • Previous HVAC experience and/or training or acceptable equivalent experience
  • Knowledge and observance of local and state electrical and mechanical codes
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Basic written, verbal, math skills, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity of construction blueprints
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the President of SWOSU or their designee may find appropriate
