Job Summary

Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah seeks a
skilled and dynamic Program(s) Manager to join the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement. The successful candidate will assist with
planning, implementation, and evaluation of Huntsman Cancer Institute’s community outreach and engagement efforts, specifically working with
American Indian residents in rural, frontier, urban, and Tribal areas throughout the Mountain West – a region that includes Idaho, Montana,
Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.



With supervision, the manager will be responsible for planning, organizing, evaluating, and managing all
aspects pertaining to multiple program functions of the American Indian Program within the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement,
including collaboration with team members, community leaders, community organizations, clinicians, and researchers.

As an integrated
staff member, the manager will work to improve knowledge and health behaviors through risk reduction and screening interventions, prevention
education, promotion of clinical trials, and engagement in research, among others. The manager will center Tribal sovereignty and employ a
culturally grounded approach, centering Native traditions, values, language, and communities.



Occasional evening and weekend hours as
well as frequent regional travel. This requires flexibility and ability to drive one’s own vehicle and University vehicles. Daily tasks can
be done in a hybrid working environment, with a mix of in-person commitments, regional travel, and tasks that can be completed
virtually.

Responsibilities
Management and Strategic PlanningKey
responsibilities include prioritizing leadership tasks, particularly those related to administrative duties, development of direct reports,
and oversight and stewardship of strategic initiatives.


  • Build and maintain academic, clinical, and Native-serving community
    partnerships to enable access to and delivery of culturally appropriate, evidence-based cancer information and education, to American Indian
    communities.
  • Contribute to the identification and creation of internal practices to enhance community engaged research, clinical,
    and outreach efforts of Huntsman Cancer Institute.
  • Understand and translate Huntsman Cancer Institute’s mission, vision, and goals
    into community outreach and engagement programming.
  • Contribute to the development of the annual budget and justification, lead out
    on progress reports, and completion of all administrative documentation.
  • Manage and provide support for professional development of
    direct reports.
  • Work internally with administrative, clinical, research, and education staff to develop and implement
    evidence-based screening and prevention interventions including but not limited to, presentations, health events, webinars, social media,
    focus groups, study recruitment, etc.

Program Planning, Implementation, and EvaluationKey responsibilities include
community engagement with >40 tribes and sovereign nations, including those in urban areas, in the Mountain West. Engagement occurs through
a phased and strategic approach to develop strong partnerships with selected communities while supporting broader regional coordination and
future expansion of relationships. Strong partnerships with Tribal health programs and Native-serving organizations are essential to
implementing sustainable education, prevention, and screening initiatives.

  • Conduct an initial assessment of the current state of
    American Indian outreach and partnerships, including existing relationships, prior activities, internal coordination processes, and gaps in
    engagement.
  • Develop and implement a strategic, phased approach (informed by the assessment) to Tribal and Native-serving
    organization engagement that prioritizes depth, continuity, and mutual benefit, including partnerships with Tribal health systems and
    Native-serving regional organizations.
  • Develop and convene an American Indian Community Advisory Board.
  • Serve as a liaison
    between partners and internal Huntsman Cancer Institute programs to support coordination, reduce duplicative outreach, and strengthen
    alignment with community priorities.
  • Identify community needs and opportunities for potential research collaboration with
    researchers, including grant support and development.
  • Facilitate opportunities for community partners to inform program priorities,
    outreach strategies, and institutional planning related to American Indian health and cancer prevention.
  • Work directly with Tribal
    health programs, Native-serving organizations, and regional coalitions to identify shared priorities and opportunities for
    collaboration.
  • Support development of joint outreach, education, and prevention initiatives in partnership and alignment with
    Community Outreach and Engagement team.
  • Facilitate coordination between community partners and relevant HCI programs and teams to
    improve access to prevention, screening, navigation, and support services.
  • Support partner capacity through training, technical
    assistance, and connection to HCI resources, as appropriate.
  • Maintain regular communication with active partners to ensure
    continuity, responsiveness, and follow-through on shared goals.

Collaboration and Cultural Advisement Serve as a
cultural advisory to clinical and research teams, and patient navigators, to support development of culturally responsive practices and
referral pathways for American Indian patients, utilizing a culturally grounded approach centering Native traditions, values, language, and
communities.


  • Collaborate with internal clinical, research, and patient navigation teams to identify opportunities and strengthen
    American Indian culturally responsive practices and institutional policies that support spiritual and cultural needs within Huntsman Cancer
    Institute and Hospital.
  • Serve as a resource for training and consultation related to culturally responsive care for American Indian
    patients and research participants, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Native-serving health programs and Native-serving service
    organizations to support grounded community education, prevention, screening, and cancer control initiatives.
  • Support adaptation
    and implementation of evidence-based interventions in partnership with communities to ensure cultural relevance and feasibility.
  • Demonstrate high proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, planning, and critical
    thinking skills.
  • Maintain current Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification, in addition to EPIC, HIPAA,
    Clinical Trials, Patient Navigation, and Defensive Driver trainings.

Minimum
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related
work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s
area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in
planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation
of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area
may be preferred.

Preferences

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field and 6-8 years of progressively more responsible
    management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes to effectively monitor and
    develop direct reports.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.
  • Current valid Utah
    driver’s license.
  • Interest in understanding the needs of communities throughout Utah and the Mountain West and experience
    developing and maintaining community partnerships.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Cultural
    humility and cultural competency skills appropriate to the population(s) served required.
  • Experience and passion in American Indian
    health, health equity, public health, health disparities, health promotion, and community-engaged research.
  • Certified Health
    Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or other relevant certification(s).
  • 10 or more years’ experience
    working in community settings and with diverse populations.
