Brief Summary of Work for this
Position:
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant functions as member of a clinical team in the provision of health
care in a fast- paced college health center. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Obtaining extensive medical and
psychiatric histories - Assessing, diagnosing, and treating acute illness and those elements of primary medical care that are
reasonable within the constraints of the nature of student health and the individual’s certification - Providing psychiatric and
medication evaluation for students - Prescribing the appropriate therapies including medication
- Providing on-going
medication monitoring - Consulting with Counseling Center and Student Health Center staff regarding patient and client care
- Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests including laboratory and radiologic tests
- Assisting with
emergencies - Documenting all pertinent data in patient’s electronic medical record
- Referring clients to
physicians/specialist and/or other community resources as appropriate - Providing a holistic approach to patient care, including
provision of patient education as appropriate
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
To qualify as a
Physician Assistant:
- Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- A passing score on the
Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). - Necessary special qualification – Graduation and or completion of an
educational program for Physician Assistants accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and an active
Physician Assistant License issued by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners.
To qualify as a Nurse
Practitioner:
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from an accredited program or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
degree from an accredited program and graduation from or completion of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) program. - Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North
Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” by the Joint
Subcommittee.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Previous work experience as a Physician
Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in a college/university setting - Previous experience working with patients 17 – 30 years old
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, colleagues, and on- and off-campus partners
Required
Certifications or Licensures:
Physician Assistant:
- Must have a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in
Psychiatry at the time of hire or within twelve months of the date of hire. - Current CPR certification required by time of
hire.
Nurse Practitioner:
- Must be certified as a PNHMP-BC at the time of hire or within twelve months of
the date of hire. - Current CPR certification required by time of hire.
All diplomas, degrees, licenses and certifications
must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
