supervisor or manager. This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes the employer to
obtain criminal history record information. A valid driver’s license issued by the State where the applicant resides and insurability as
defined in UTS 157 may be required to perform the position’s essential functions.
Purpose of Position
The Sr
Coordinator of Student Borrowing assists with the daily operations of all student loan efforts. Provides quality customer service to
students and their families, especially in regards to “smart borrowing”. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of a $66 million-dollar
federal loan portfolio along with private student loan portfolio. This position requires ongoing, well-managed contact with students, and
working closely with a third-party servicer.
Essential Functions
Responsible for managing,
reviewing and processing the extract/import loan reports associated with the Federal Direct Loan Programs for graduate, undergraduate, and
parent loans.
Oversee the disbursement of these federal funds to the student accounts ensuring that all student eligibility
requirements are met and in compliance with Federal regulations.
Counsel students and parents regarding loan application processing
and disbursements; advise all students on principles of “smart borrowing”.
Leads in the certification, transmittal and disbursement
of alternative loans. Make all necessary adjustments to institutional student database and communicate changes to lenders/servicers.
Assist in the review, verification and awarding of need and non-need based financial aid awards.
Act as the point of contact
for the annual review of alternative loan lenders and their products. Suggest website updates and maintain electronic publications to ensure
the University complies with federal regulations as they relate to this matter.
Assists the Director and Assistant Director with
implementing and maintaining internal controls and procedures to minimize risk/compliance exposure.
Assists with identifying and
analyzing systematic problems, proposes solutions, and provides internal training to address loan issues.
Facilitate activities
related to smart borrowing such as interactive learning sessions regarding loans to enhance the federal entrance/exit counseling
requirements.
Assist in the development of materials, paper and web-based, related to default prevention and fiscal responsibility
including social media content.
Analyzes various system-generated reports to verify compliance and eligibility of students
receiving aid under federal and institutional guidelines.
Responsible for providing student loan counseling, information, and
assistance to students in accordance with federal and state requirements and the school’s default prevention program.
Enforces
rules regarding cost of attendance, financial need, and other financial assistance (OFA).
Informs borrowers of their rights and
responsibilities under the Direct Loan and private educational loans.
Works collaboratively with other UTEP staff members, external
loan servicers, appropriate vendors, and community agencies in developing strategies directed towards informed borrowing.
Assists
the Assistant Director of Funds Management with monthly reconciliations for institutional, state, federal, and private student loan funding.
Corresponds with applicants/recipients to resolve questions regarding loan application and eligibility information.
Composes and prepares confidential correspondence, reports, and other complex documents.
Confers with individuals and groups to
disseminate information and conducts scholarship, financial aid, default prevention, and financial literacy workshops at local high schools,
on campus and throughout the community as requested.
Counsels and advises students regarding their financial options and
responsibilities.
Able to multitask while handling a high volume of inbound and outbound calls, emailing, texting and documenting
student information.
Answers inquiries regarding awards and problems with aid and academic eligibility.
Keeps current on
financial aid regulations and policies by subscribing to list-serves, reading loan regulations, policies, and procedures that are
distributed by federal, state, and institutional sources, networking with counterparts at other universities, and attending workshops,
conferences, and seminars.
Maintains a high degree of confidentiality with all sensitive information.
Complies with all
Federal, State and University policies.
Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Supervisory
Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Education,
Public Administration, Social Sciences or related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a
year-for-year basis.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a higher
education. Two (2) years of proven customer service experience.
Note: To be able to perform the duties of this
position, the candidate must have access to several federal databases. To be granted access and clearance to these federal systems, the
incumbent cannot be in default on any type of federal student loan.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Supervisory experience.
- Minimum of one to two years of work experience in financial aid administration or student loan processing
in an automated environment. - Bilingual in Spanish.
- Familiarity with financial aid terminologies, processes and
activities. - Knowledge of Ellucian Banner.
- Experience with reading and interpreting the federal register, federal
compliance and regulatory requirements. - Advanced skill using Federal systems – COD and NSLDS.
Knowledge,
Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and ability to learn and use institutional software systems.
Ability to analyze issues and suggest possible alternatives and options to address issues.
