Technical Director (Part-Time)

Hartwick College’s Department of Theatre seeks a part-time Technical Director to work on two performances in Fall
2025 (September 15 – December 15) and two performances in Spring 2026 (February 2 – May 2).

Description: The
Technical Director is responsible for providing technical support for theatre stage productions (up to two per semester) including the
oversight, maintenance and safe operation of theatre facilities and equipment. The Technical Director will also oversee student employees
working on the scenic build. The Technical Director may have the opportunity to work as lighting and scenic designer based on
experience.



Responsibilities:

  • Manage the department’s theater spaces and scene shop as needed for
    performances
  • Oversee the scenic, electric, sound, and video equipment used in performances
  • Coordinate with designers to
    achieve successful performances
  • Oversee safety in the various theatre spaces
  • Lead the scenic build, installation, and strike
    of scenery and other elements, while overseeing student employees
  • Paint the scenery (or coordinate others in that)
  • Attend
    production meetings weekly to coordinate with the artistic staff and stage manager(s)
  • Depending on the experience of the individual,
    there may be opportunities to work as a lighting or scenic designer
  • Comply with all applicable College, Federal, State, and local
    laws, rules and regulations
  • As a representative of the College, comport oneself in a professional manner at all times, both on and
    off campus
  • Participate in significant College events, including Welcome Weekend, True Blue Weekend, and Commencement
    Weekend
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Qualifications: Minimum requirements for the position are a
B.F.A or B.A. from an accredited college or university in technical theater, and/or demonstrated experience at the professional or
collegiate level.



  • Demonstrated knowledge of scenery and construction/rigging methods and materials and lighting equipment and
    software
  • Mathematical skills: Ability to perform simple mathematical computations with high degree of accuracy regarding lighting
    and scenery engineering requirements
  • Ability to practice safe handling procedures for scenic construction and equipment, hand and
    power tools, and materials used in scenic construction
  • Ability to use computer software to support the production process as
    appropriate (Microsoft and Google for spreadsheets and databases, CAD, QLab)
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to
    multi-task
  • High level of verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible
  • Supervisory experience
    preferred

Physical Demands:

The Technical Director position requires significant physical stress. The
individual must be able to work all the machines in the scene shop and theatre, several requiring physical strength. Much of the lighting
work requires use of ladders and scaffolding. Simultaneous work is often performed in both the lab theatre facility and Slade Theatre which
are in two separate buildings separated by several sets of long, steep stairs. Scenery must be loaded from the shop to a vehicle to our
storage facility which is located in a third building.



The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and
occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision
and ability to see color.



Wage Range: $40.00 per hour ($11,000 per semester)
