POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW

The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Temporary Ensemble Assistant, Mannes Opera Orchestra to join its Large Ensemble team. Reporting to the Large Ensemble Manager, the Temporary Ensemble Assistant supports more students across the College of Performing Arts who take part in Large Ensemble and Mannes Opera Orchestra activities. The Temporary Ensemble Assistant will lead and collaborate in the oversight of large ensemble programs for the Mannes Opera Orchestra and others as assigned.



The Temporary Ensemble Assistant is a compassionate and motivated administrator who prioritizes students and their experience at the College. The Temporary Ensemble Assistant is an excellent collaborator and communicator with an ability to manage complex programmatic processes and operations.

The Temporary Ensemble Assistant, Mannes Opera Orchestra will assist with coordinating all ensemble logistics, administration, and management during the Mannes Opera’s production of Erich Korngold’s Die Stumme Serenade, and the House of Yes Opera workshop.


This is an FLSA non exempt hourly (average 18 hours per week) temporary position with a desired start date of 2/16/2026 and an end date of 4/10/2026.

PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Assist in collecting repertoire and securing performance rights as needed, including purchases/rentals of musical scores and parts
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of parts
  • Collaborate with Performance Operations colleagues to create production schedules, stage plots, instrument/equipment lists, input flows, transition planning, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to develop concert programs, secure media releases, and plan social media opportunities
  • Create IT, A/V, and Facilities work orders for rehearsals and concerts
  • Supervise stagehands for set up and breakdown, rehearsals, recordings, and concerts
  • Oversee guest artists (ringers) in coordination with the Large Ensemble Manager
  • Create and maintain administrative documents for the Large Ensemble Department
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in arts administration or production, including student work, internships, volunteer work, and other forms of experience
  • Basic knowledge of the operations of music ensembles, including knowledge of repertoire, personnel management, and orchestra library management
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to develop creative approaches to complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; can present complex information to various audiences
  • Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School’s suite of data systems including WorkDay, Tableau, Banner, and 25Live
  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and the transformative power of the arts and education
  • Additional duties as assigned

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience with Dorico (or related notation software)


WORK MODE

  • This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
    • Hybrid work arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the role and operational needs. Any such arrangement must be discussed and approved in advance by the appropriate division lead or their designee.

  • Schedule Requirements:
    • Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays from 02/23/26 through 04/03/26
      • 11:00am to 5:00pm

    • Additional production times:
    • 3/7 2:00pm to 8:00pm
    • 3/10, 3/11, 3/13, 3/14 6:00pm to 10:00pm
    • 4/3 4:00 to 9:00pm



SALARY RANGE



$24.00/hour
