POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW
The Front of House area at The New School’s College of Performing Arts is seeking highly qualified Overhire House Managers to join its team. Reporting to the Manager of Event Operations, the Overhire House Manager is directly responsible for the patron experience at on-site events.
This role oversees ushers on-site, liaises with production staff, fields patron and performance-related issues that arise, and ensures that venues are safe and clean. The House Manager is responsible for creating an excellent experience for patrons, serving as the point person for ushers and performers, and overseeing fire code compliance in performance spaces.
Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the Front of House department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide excellent customer service to patrons
- Maintain safe and clean public spaces, communicate with facilities and campus safety as necessary
- Ensure fire code compliance in performance spaces and provide leadership in emergency situations
- Serve as the point person for ushers’ scheduling and event-specific duties
- Coordinate performance timelines with relevant parties (stage management, performers, faculty, audio/video staff, etc)
- Oversee audience check in, distribution of programs, and audience seating
- Work with production staff to meet event-specific needs
- Resolve on-site issues and conflicts, documenting incidents as needed
- Complete a house report for each event worked
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years of experience in live performance events
- Previous experience in customer service roles
- A background in the performing arts, especially music and/or theater
- Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Inclusion, Social Justice, and the transformative power of the arts and education
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Previous House Management experience
- Active F-03 Fireguard Certification
WORK MODE
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
Nights and weekends are required.
SALARY RANGE
$22.00/hour
