Job Summary

The Transportation
Services Coordinator is responsible for the management of several University transportation services including Charter Services, the Mt. Ida
Shuttle, Accessible Van Service and Administration Transportation Car Services provided by the Specialty Driver to University leaders. This
position is also responsible for the management of transportation-related contracts with outside vendors supporting UMass Amherst
campus.



Essential Functions

  • Responsible for providing training required to ensure the safe operation of
    the vans and buses utilized in these services. Advises Transit’s training unit on training required for drivers of all ADA compliant
    vehicles.
  • Develop and manage budgets, customer service processes and billing procedures for ground transportation. Prepare the
    annual fee requests presented to the UMA Budget Office. Ensure University accounting practices are followed for fee-based services and that
    data is collected as needed.
  • Acts as liaison and resource for members of the University community seeking specialty or accessible
    transportation from area vendors. Administers transportation-related contracts including coach bus transportation.
  • Hires, trains,
    supports and evaluates student and full-time supervisory and management staff in charter and paratransit services.
  • Establishes and
    maintains performance goals that are consistent with the mission and objectives of UMA; develops, modifies and monitors organizational
    structures to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services.
  • Works closely with other Transit staff to ensure safe and
    reliable services. Participates in a rotational 24-hour on call system, fills in for other managerial staff and responds to emergency
    situations as needed. Assists in the development of departmental systems, policies, procedures and new approaches that support, foster and
    assure continuous quality improvement.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division,
    and University goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)


  • At
    least 5 years related experience, 2 (two) of which are served in a supervisory capacity.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License
    (CDL) with passenger endorsement from state of legal residence.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOT medical examiner’s card.
  • General knowledge of fund accounting principles, AP processes and the ability to work with complex databases such as PeopleSoft
  • Understanding of charter and paratransit operations.
  • Ability to develop budgets to include forecasting, monitor and report
    variances/problems and recommend solutions.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal transit regulations, including Massachusetts
    Vehicle Code and Public Utility Commission (PUC) regulations.
  • Proficiency in modern management theories and relevant business
    software applications.
  • Strong planning, organizing, and monitoring skills for transportation operations
  • Proven ability to
    provide exceptional customer service
  • Ability to develop and implement problem-solving strategies and analyze complex data.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including the preparation of reports and professional correspondence.
  • Capability to supervise, train, and motivate staff, and interact professionally with various stakeholders.
  • Competence in
    financial and staffing planning.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

Degree
or certification in transportation, planning, business administration or another related field.

    classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit
    Administration (FTA) regulations.

Schedule

  • Monday-Friday; 9am-5pm.
  • 24 hours on-call, weekend/holiday work required when necessary.
  • This position is deemed essential and is to report in adverse weather events and campus closures.
