The Role

As part of our renewed 2026 strategy, we are enhancing research leadership across the University. The current appointment is amongst the first in a number of planned professorial appointments we will make. The candidate will play a key and leading role in supporting our research aspirations, developing our existing research talent, and contribute directly to the achievement of our strategic research goals.

For this appointment, we are seeking to increase research capability and expertise aligned to our strong commitment to community health and wellbeing. We have chosen to focus on clinical exercise science as a cross-cutting theme that will bolster existing strengths in a number of areas at the University. An outstanding researcher in this area will also maximise the benefits of our partnerships with York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust with whom we work closely and have established a number of research projects and initiatives. The successful candidate will work directly with these and other partners, as well as our academic community, to make a meaningful and significant contribution to our impactful research and research environment. They will also work with our Pro Vice Chancellor: Research and Knowledge Transfer, and be supported in establishing themselves at York St John in ensuring their career as an outstanding research leader is maintained and enhanced.

Required skills and experience

Candidates will have an outstanding track-record of research publications and attracting external research income in the area of health, exercise and physical activity. They will also have extensive experience of building and leading interdisciplinary research teams in conducting research within the NHS.
