We are excited to recruit a Research Assistant, on a full-time basis (37.5 hrs pw). You will be joining the Contract Research Team at The Griffin Institute (TGI) (brand name for Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research (NPIMR)), which is a leading Medical Research and Surgical Training Institute based at Northwick Park and Saint Mark’s Hospitals in Harrow, North London.

The Contract Research team plans and delivers bespoke research projects for both external clients and the Institute’s own Research & Development department. The research conducted at TGI is wide-ranging, with the overall theme being pre-clinical research.

The successful candidate will assist the Contract Research team, including Study Directors and technical staff to plan and deliver research projects.

Role & Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will have a supportive role within the Contract Research team, and will be expected to:

  • Assist with writing study protocols and reports (to GLP standards)
  • Liaise with clients, attend study meetings, manage and respond to study related correspondence
  • Assist with study data collection and analysis
  • Perform a range of laboratory techniques, including histology
  • Acquire, organise and maintain equipment or supplies necessary for the studies
  • Assist with writing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Comply with Health and Safety and in-house policies

Essential qualifications and experience required:

  • Degree in Life Sciences or Veterinary Science preferred (BSc, 2.1 minimum) such as Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology (equivalent experience in a supportive or technical role within a scientific institution or company may be considered)
  • Experience of writing scientific documents including study protocols and reports
  • Experience following detailed experimental protocols
  • Experience with collecting and logging experimental data
  • Experience of data analysis, particularly using spreadsheets and creating graphs and charts
  • Experience of searching relevant scientific literature and resources
  • Experience working with external customers
  • Ability to work co-operatively, engage with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to deliver objectives to deadlines
  • Problem solving skills
  • Good communication skills
  • IT Literate: competent using Microsoft 365 packages

Desirable Skills: (These would be advantageous, but training will be provided):

  • Good Laboratory Practice standards and procedures
  • Laboratory experience, particularly:
    • Histology: embedding, sectioning and staining
    • Immunohistochemistry
    • Using clinical pathology analysers
  • Statistical analysis of data
  • Writing SOPs
  • Scientific communication
