Research Fellow in Sustainable Mobility – Logistics

Architecture Building & Planning

Full Time Fixed Term until 30/06/2024

You will join the team led by Professor Tom Cherrett (Transportation Research Group) working on the Department for Transport’s, Future Transport Zones, Macro and Micro Logistics projects.

You will be responsible for overseeing and contributing to fundamental research into i) how freight deliveries to householders and commercial premises in our urban centres can be better undertaken through consolidating loads (macro logistics); ii) the ways in which deliveries and collections can be made more sustainably using low/zero emission transport solutions such as cargo cycles, porters, autonomous vehicles, in combination with more innovative use of urban space to accommodate them (e.g. drop-off/transhipment points in car parks, community centres etc).

You will work with the project partners and a variety of private sector companies to simulate and evaluate these possible logistics concepts using primary business-as-usual data on current operations before working with them to implement physical feasibility trials on the ground in locations across the Solent Region.

The research will involve working with a series of industrial partners and local authorities, utilising a variety of data sets ranging from significant post-round historic data from logistics companies showing origin – destination movements of goods to GPS data of delivery vehicles operating second-by-second across different geographical areas. These data will be used to evaluate the potential introduction of new systems and the design of practical implementation trials.

The findings, methods and systems developed are expected to be of sufficient scientific novelty and application that they will be published in leading transport scientific journals. You will disseminate the research findings at project meetings, international conferences, industrial and public engagement events. As an experienced researcher, you will be responsible for supporting general research activity at the University of Southampton and encouraging PhD, MSc and Undergraduate student engagement in the research.

To be successful you will have a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in a science related discipline, (preferably with relevance to one or other of the following areas: Logistics, Transport/Mobility Management, Operational Research, Data Management and Visualisation). In addition, you will have demonstrated independent research, with a publications track record, and the ability to work with other academics, local and central Government and industry.

A key requirement of this post is that you have experience of designing practical research trials, preferably which have involved external industry/local authority partners, and that you are have experience of, and confidence in liaising with different stakeholders both face-to-face and in written communication.

It is important you are able to work to conflicting deadlines and possess good organisational and time management skills, pay close attention to detail, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Existing experience of urban logistics operations will be an advantage.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
