The University of Malta traces its origins to 1592 and is the oldest established University in the British Commonwealth outside mainland Britain. While English is the main language of instruction, the academic traditions and life-style are, like much of Maltese culture, an interesting blend of continental European and Anglo-Saxon set within and influenced by a uniquely Mediterranean culture. 

The Department of Media and Communications, in the Faculty of Media & Knowledge Sciences,  runs Bachelor, Master’s and Ph.D programmes, and is also an important reference point in matters related to Media and Communications in Malta. Its graduates provide the cornerstone of these areas in the country, both as practitioners and as researchers. 

The Department  is seeking to recruit a full-time Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor in Media and Communications on a full-time basis. The appointment will be on an initial definite four-year contract of employment with the possibility of tenure. Successful completion of a one-year probationary period is followed by a two-year Tenure Track process, and a Tenure Review. 

The appointee to this post will be required to contribute to the teaching, research and other activities of the Department of Media and Communication within the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences (MAKS), and as may be required by the University. 

Candidates must be in possession of a PhD, or an equivalent based doctorate, in Media and Communications. Expertise in one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: media systems; the different manifestations of journalism (through practice and research); social media use and research; media ethics; communicative and academic writing.  Due importance will be given to the candidate’s lecturing experience at university level, research agenda and publications, together with work experience in well-established and professional journalism contexts. 

The candidate should ideally possess the following: prior teaching experience at University level; prior experience in dissertation supervision; excellent oral and written communication skills; administrative capabilities; as well as the proven ability to:  1. engage the interest and enthusiasm of students; 2. design course materials and plan and organise the delivery and assessment of taught courses; 3. assess student learning needs; 4. provoke conceptual thinking, creativity and innovation; 5. build relationships and collaborate with others.
