The Faraday Institution (FI) is the UK’s flagship organisation for electrochemical energy storage research, skills development, market analysis and early-stage commercialisation. It brings together research scientists and industry partners to work on large projects with commercial potential that will reduce battery cost, weight, and volume; improve performance and reliability; and develop whole-life strategies including recycling and reuse. The FI manages large research programmes across 27 universities involving 500+ researchers and 50 industry partners across the UK.
The Faraday Institution is looking to appoint a self-motivated individual to the role of Training Manager. Reporting into the Head of Training and Talent Development, this role will manage the operations of the FI’s training programmes to further its mission of creating a dynamic and diverse pool of talent for the fields of battery technology and energy storage as we look to go fully electric in the quest for a more sustainable future. This position would suit an individual with a wealth of experience in the education or training sector and who thrives on working in a fast-paced environment on a variety of projects simultaneously and helping others to achieve their potential.

Roles and responsibilities
The Training Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Faraday Institution’s training programmes, which includes the following four focus areas: 1. Researcher professional development (with a Faraday Masterclass series with experts in the field, Early Career Researcher events and training that boosts professional identity and skills), 2. A bespoke PhD training programme, 3. A thriving undergraduate internship programme and 4. Targeted STEM outreach.
The Training Manager will work closely with the Head of Training and Talent Development to ensure the achievement of the overall programme’s objectives and to manage the successful day-to-day operations of the FI training programmes. Some of their specific duties and responsibilities include:
• Building and maintaining annual training schedule
• Communicating with key stakeholders and attendees of training programmes
• Monitoring and assessing the effectiveness and success of training programmes
• Creating training materials and communications
• Writing reports, keeping records and managing training budgets
• Ensuring accessibility and access needs of participants are identified and met
• Keeping up to date on the latest training trends, developments and best practices
• Participating in a range of research community training committees
Specific to the PhD programme:
• Managing schedule, building relationships with participants, facilitation with training providers and hosting for week-long residential training sessions (held up to 5 times per year);
• Liaising with and coaching PhD researchers about ways to boost researcher identity and ensure career success
Our work is changing and growing at pace, and as such, this role will constantly evolve to encompass new tasks.
To be successful / key competencies
• A good honours degree in science or engineering subject, science communication or teaching
• Demonstrable experience of developing and implementing high-quality education or training programmes and courses to include event organising and hosting
• Leadership skills and confidence in being the front person for a range of initiatives
• High proficiency and confidence using a range of digital platforms such as Zoom, MS Office Suite, and other platforms such as Survey Monkey and Eventbrite
• Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to present confidently to a wide range of audiences
• The capability to write reports for stakeholders that capture course evaluations, recommendations and case studies
• Confidence and professionalism to represent the organisation widely, increasing stakeholder engagement and networks
• Aptitude for using own initiative to overcome challenges to complete tasks to a high standard
• Excellent project and time management skills, ensuring that milestones and deliverables are achieved to time
• Willingness to travel to events across the UK on public transport (with up to 5 week-long residential courses a year)
• A scientific background, teaching skills, curriculum development and outreach resource creation would all be advantageous
• An interest in seeing people reach their potential whilst raising STEM career aspirations and science capital
• Knowledge of various training methods including coaching, workshops, in-person classroom training, mentoring, online delivery methods and e-learning programmes
• Ability to track the performance of training programmes, write reports and recommend strategies for improvement
• Skilled in collaborating with stakeholders and academics
• Ability to work remotely, independently under own initiative as well as collaboratively
• Good communication, analytical, critical thinking skills and problem solving skills
• Demonstrable experience of working flexibly, including the ability to adapt swiftly to new situations, prioritise workloads, juggle multiple projects simultaneously and manage deadlines

• Location: Currently blended working from home and based at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, near Oxford, UK (with an expectation that the Training Manager will be in the office 2-3 days a week minimum)
• Salary: £40,000 – 43,000
• Start date: ASAP
