Job Summary

The Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan, renowned for its leadership in educational research and practice, is excited to welcome a Finance and Human Resources Specialist to our team. We have over 100 dedicated staff members and approximately 70 faculty, in addition to more than 50 lecturers. Our mission is to generate and study evidence-based teaching, learning, and research practices, policies, methods, and tools so that we contribute to a society where all can flourish and teach future educators, university leaders, education researchers, policymakers, parents, and community leaders to be their best for the learners they serve.

In this role, you will play a key part in supporting our faculty, staff, and students by providing excellent customer service and expert consultation across a range of finance and HR matters. Reporting to both the Director of Human Resources and the Director of Budget and Financial Planning, you will administer business processes while ensuring compliance with internal controls, federal regulations, and university policies.
Responsibilities*
Finance 50%



  • Advise Marsal faculty and staff on school, university, and Government financial guidelines.
  • Follow-up on outstanding finance issues and respond to questions as needed.
  • Act as liaison with the Shared Services Center to resolve finance issues.
  • Determine and establish new chartfield combinations as needed.
  • Prepare and process financial documents such as cash deposits.
  • Procure goods and services required for School operations, and process payments using purchase orders and PeoplePay
  • Interact and work closely with University Procurement offices on service agreement projects and other situations when appropriate.
  • Identify, address and resolve accounting problems in collaboration with the team leadership as well as the Shared Services Center.
  • Prepare and process journal entries.
  • Process Accounts Receivable transactions.
  • Coordinate finance onboarding process for new colleagues.
  • Back up other members of the teams as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Human Resources 50%

  • Manage LEO Faculty employment lifecycle, including issuing offer letters and layoff letters.
  • Lead Marsal temp and student hire and change process.
  • Assist with employee recognition and engagement activities
  • Partner with SSC to implement personnel action request (PAR) changes in the wolverine access system.
  • Monitor Gross Pay Registers
  • Advise Marsal faculty and staff on HR policies and procedures.
  • Post and screen for new faculty and staff roles.
  • Manage Staff Professional Development funding process
  • Onboard new staff, lead programs designed to integrate staff into the community
  • Monitor restricted table for MCommunity sponsorship applications
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*


Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
3+ years of experience in an administrative role
3+ years customer service experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Evidence of excellent customer service orientation and collaborative work style.
Desired Qualifications*

Prior experience in higher education
Working knowledge of university procurement, financial reporting, and HR systems
Modes of Work



This position is hybrid with a possibility of 2 remote days per week. Other days will be on-site at the Marsal School of Education, 610 E. University, Ann Arbor, MI 48109.
